Everyone is welcome
Accessibility at Gocha
We build getgocha.com so that people using screen readers, keyboards, magnification, captions or switch devices can shop exactly like anyone else. This statement explains our standard, the laws we follow in the United States, Canada and Mexico, and how to get help fast.
Conformance
- Standard
- WCAG 2.1 AA
- Status
- Partially conformant
- Audited
- Quarterly
“Partially conformant” means most of the site meets WCAG 2.1 AA today and known gaps are tracked with owners and target dates. Nothing here limits your rights under the ADA, the Accessible Canada Act, provincial accessibility legislation, or Mexican disability and consumer law.
Full keyboard operation
Visible focus rings, a skip-to-content link, logical tab order and no keyboard traps across browsing, cart and checkout.
Screen-reader ready
Semantic landmarks, labelled controls, descriptive alt text on product imagery and live announcements for cart and form status.
Personal display controls
Built-in panel for text size, high contrast, reduced motion, underlined links, a readable typeface and a larger cursor — saved to your device.
Reflow and zoom
Content reflows to 320px and stays usable at 200% zoom, with target sizes and spacing tuned for touch and tremor.
Our standard
Gocha targets WCAG 2.1 Level AA (and adopts WCAG 2.2 AA success criteria such as focus appearance and target size where practical). WCAG is the standard referenced by US Department of Justice ADA guidance, by Section 508, by Ontario's AODA, and by Mexican accessibility norms — meeting it once satisfies all three countries.
- Perceivable — text alternatives, captions, contrast of at least 4.5:1 for body text.
- Operable — keyboard access everywhere, no timing traps, no flashing content, visible focus.
- Understandable — consistent navigation, clear labels, error messages that say how to fix the problem.
- Robust — valid semantic HTML and ARIA so assistive technology can interpret every control.
Laws we follow
United States
- Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Titles II & III — courts and the DOJ treat online stores as places of public accommodation and use WCAG 2.1 AA as the practical benchmark.
- Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act — WCAG 2.0/2.1 AA for federal procurement and contractors.
- Section 504 and the 21st Century Communications and Video Accessibility Act (CVAA) where applicable.
- State laws including California's Unruh Civil Rights Act and AB 434, New York State Human Rights Law and NYC Human Rights Law, Colorado HB21-1110, and Illinois IITAA.
Canada
- Accessible Canada Act (ACA) and the Accessible Canada Regulations — accessibility plans, feedback processes and progress reports for federally regulated entities.
- Ontario AODA Integrated Accessibility Standards Regulation s.14 — WCAG 2.0 Level AA for public web content.
- Manitoba Accessible Information and Communication Standard, Nova Scotia Accessibility Act, BC Accessible British Columbia Act and Quebec SGQRI 008 standards.
- Canadian Human Rights Act and provincial human rights codes, which prohibit discrimination in access to goods and services.
Mexico
- Ley General para la Inclusión de las Personas con Discapacidad — accessible information and communications, including digital services.
- Ley Federal para Prevenir y Eliminar la Discriminación (CONAPRED) — denial of accessible service can constitute discrimination.
- NOM-034-SSA / NMX-I-102/03-NYCE-2018 alignment with WCAG, and the Ley Federal de Protección al Consumidor (PROFECO) rules on clear, accessible commercial information.
- Mexico ratified the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD), Article 9 of which covers access to information and communications technology.
What we have done
- Skip-to-content link and semantic landmarks (header, nav, main, footer) on every page.
- An accessibility panel — text size, high contrast, reduced motion, underlined links, readable typeface and large cursor — saved on your device.
- System-level prefers-reduced-motion support: animations stop automatically when your device asks for it.
- Descriptive alt text on product photography, and product options exposed as labelled, keyboard-operable controls.
- Forms with programmatic labels, inline error text and status announcements, including checkout and the wholesale application.
- Colour contrast checked against our gold-on-charcoal palette; colour is never the only way information is conveyed.
Known limitations
We publish gaps rather than hide them — an honest, dated list is stronger evidence of good faith than a blanket claim of full compliance.
- Some third-party embeds (payment pages, review widgets, shipment tracking) are outside our code; we test them and raise defects with the vendor.
- A few older product videos lack captions or audio description; new videos ship with captions.
- Some customer-uploaded review photos have no alt text; we add descriptions during moderation.
How we test
- Automated scans (axe-core / Lighthouse) on every release.
- Manual keyboard-only walkthroughs of browse, product, cart, checkout and account flows.
- Screen-reader passes with VoiceOver (macOS/iOS), NVDA and JAWS on Windows.
- Zoom to 200% and 320px reflow checks on mobile and desktop.
- A full review at least quarterly and after any major redesign.
