How to Descale a Coffee Maker

4 min readUpdated September 2026

Descaling removes the mineral scale that hard water leaves inside a coffee maker. The standard home method is a 1:1 mix of white vinegar and water run through a full brew cycle, left to sit, then flushed with two or three cycles of clean water. Most machines need it every one to three months depending on water hardness.

01

Signs it is overdue

  • Brewing takes noticeably longer than it used to.
  • The machine is louder, sputters, or the carafe comes up short.
  • Coffee tastes flat or slightly bitter even with fresh beans.
  • Visible white chalky deposits in the reservoir.
02

The vinegar cycle

  • Empty the carafe and remove any used filter or grounds.
  • Fill the reservoir with equal parts white vinegar and water.
  • Start a brew cycle and stop it about halfway, so the solution sits in the machine for 30-60 minutes.
  • Restart and let it finish.
  • Discard the liquid, then run two or three full cycles of clean water to flush the vinegar out. Coffee brewed too soon after will taste of vinegar.
  • Wash the carafe, filter basket and lid by hand or in the dishwasher if they are dishwasher-safe.
03

When to use a descaler instead of vinegar

  • Espresso machines, capsule machines and machines with internal boilers often specify a commercial descaler; some manufacturers void warranty cover for vinegar use.
  • Check the manual before descaling anything with a pump or a heated boiler.
  • Citric acid solution is a common alternative that leaves less residual smell than vinegar.
04

How often, and how to slow it down

  • Hard water: every month. Soft water or light use: every three months.
  • Filtered water reduces scale build-up considerably and improves the coffee at the same time.
  • Empty the reservoir between uses rather than leaving standing water in it.
  • Leave the lid open after brewing so the inside dries.
Frequently asked

Fill the reservoir with equal parts white vinegar and water, run half a brew cycle, let it sit 30-60 minutes, finish the cycle, then run two or three cycles of clean water to flush it.

Monthly with hard water, and about every three months with soft water or light use.

Often not. Many espresso and capsule machines specify a commercial descaler, and some manufacturers exclude vinegar damage from warranty cover — check the manual first.

Run two or three full cycles of clean water and wash the carafe and basket before brewing coffee again.
