How Long Will My Open Bottle Last?
An opened bottle of still wine lasts about 1-3 days re-corked at room temperature, 3-5 days re-corked in the fridge, and 3-7 days with a vacuum stopper in the fridge. Sparkling wine fades fastest; fortified wine keeps for weeks. Set your bottle below for an estimate.
Estimated drinking window
3.8 days – 5.7 days
Re-seal after every pour; each glass lets a fresh charge of air back in.
What to watch out for
Oxygen and heat are the two clocks
Oxygen turns alcohol into acetaldehyde, which is the flat, bruised-apple taste of day-four wine. Heat speeds that reaction up, which is why the fridge roughly doubles the window.
Never vacuum sparkling wine
A vacuum pulls the carbonation out with the air. Sparkling wine needs a pressure-sealing stopper instead.
Re-seal after every pour
The clock restarts each time air gets back into the bottle, so seal it again as soon as you have poured.
Questions
How long does open red wine last?
About 3-5 days re-corked in the fridge, and 5-7 days with a vacuum stopper. Lighter reds fade a couple of days sooner.
Should open red wine go in the fridge?
Yes. Cold slows oxidation. Take it out about 20 minutes before pouring.
How long does open champagne last?
One to three days with a pressure stopper made for sparkling wine.
Is week-old open wine safe to drink?
It is safe, but unless it was vacuum-sealed and refrigerated it will taste flat or vinegary.
